Four elements decide whether the installation still looks clean three years later: aluminum alloy and thermal mass, diffuser material, mounting geometry, and driver/power engineering. This guide follows the order a specifier actually makes the decision — measure the strip, choose the section, choose the cover, then size the power.

While the steps below are written around kitchen wall cabinets — the most common under-cabinet application — the same selection logic applies to any cabinet-mounted run: wardrobes, wine cabinets, bookcases, display niches, and credenzas.

1. Material Selection: Aluminum Alloys & Optical Covers

Extruded Aluminum (6063-T5): High-grade 6063-T5 aluminum is the industry benchmark for cabinet extrusions. In kitchen environments exposed to steam, cooking oils, and fluctuating humidity, anodized aluminum resists corrosion, pitting, and warping. Specify a matte anodized or powder-coated finish: a mirror-polished channel under a wall cabinet reflects the countertop and reads as glare, not light.

Diffuser Material (PC vs. PMMA vs. Acrylic): The cover controls both light softness and long-term durability, and it is where most cheap profiles fail first.

Polycarbonate (PC): Impact-resistant, fire-retardant, and stable at the temperatures found under a working wall cabinet. It survives on-site cutting without cracking and resists yellowing under continuous heat.

PMMA (optical-grade acrylic): The highest transmission and the best clarity of the three, and a good choice for display niches. Standard low-cost acrylic, however, must be avoided in kitchens: cooking heat and grease vapour cloud it, craze it, and turn it yellow well before its rated life.

Flexible silicone: Where the cabinetry has a curved breakfast bar, a radiused island, or a rounded display shelf, rigid aluminum cannot follow the geometry. A flexible silicone sleeve gives seamless diffuse light around the bend with no corner joint to shadow.

Matériau

Clarity / Light

Impact resistance

Kitchen durability

Best use

PC (polycarbonate)

Good clarity

High — survives site cutting without cracking

Resists yellowing under continuous heat; fire-retardant

Working wall cabinets, high-impact areas

PMMA (optical-grade acrylic)

Highest clarity & transmission

Modéré

Optical grade: good · Low-cost grade: clouds, crazes, yellows

Display niches, wine cabinets

Standard low-cost acrylic

High, but degrades fast

Low — brittle

Poor — clouds & yellows under cooking heat/grease

Avoid in kitchens

Flexible silicone

Seamless diffuse line

Flexible — bends around curves

Bon

Curved islands, radiused shelves

2. Thermal Management: Wall Thickness and the Heat Path

Wall thickness is the lifetime spec nobody prints on the box. High-density strip generates concentrated heat at the PCB. That heat has exactly one place to go: into the extrusion, then out through its surface area into the cabinet void. A thin, light-gauge channel has neither the mass to absorb the heat nor the surface to shed it, so the same strip that performs well in a heavy section will fade and colour-shift far earlier in a thin one.

Match the driver to the run, not to the shelf. A regulated constant-voltage or constant-current driver keeps current identical along the whole run. For short runs, 12 V is adequate; past roughly two metres, specify 24 V so voltage drop does not leave the far end visibly dimmer than the near end. Buying a driver because it is the cheapest one that fits the wattage is the second most common cause of a dull last metre.

3. Light Quality for Task Areas

The profile protects the light; the strip defines it. When you specify the strip that goes inside the channel, three parameters matter under a wall cabinet:

Colour temperature (CCT): 4000K neutral white for food preparation — it renders ingredients honestly and keeps a long session at the counter comfortable. 3000K warm white for wine cabinets, credenzas, and bedroom wardrobes, where the goal is ambience rather than task clarity.

Colour rendering (CRI): Specify Ra ≥ 90 for any surface where food or fabric is judged. Below Ra 80, fresh produce looks grey and timber and stone finishes lose their warmth — the single most common complaint after a retrofit.

Output and evenness: Brightness is set by the strip and the driver, not by the profile, so agree the target with your strip supplier and check a photometric report before you commit. What the profile must guarantee is that the light arrives evenly — no hot band at the feed end, no dark tail at the far end.

4. Step 1 — Measure the strip before you choose the profile

The single most common mistake on under-cabinet jobs is buying a profile that is narrower than the strip intended to go inside it. Standard tape is 8, 10 or 12 mm wide, but high-output or IP-rated strips can be 14–15 mm across the silicone sleeve, and solder joints add 1–2 mm at every feed point.

Rule: inner width = strip width + at least 1 mm clearance. A strip forced into an extrusion with zero clearance will lift at the edges, break its adhesive backing, and transfer heat poorly to the aluminum.

5. Step 2 — Pick the mounting type for your cabinet stage

Where the profile sits dictates whether you want it recessed, surface-mounted, or tucked into a 45° corner:

Recessed (flushed into a routed slot): The cleanest visual result. The face of the diffuser sits flush with the bottom panel of the cabinet. Requires routing a groove (typically 12–15 mm wide and 8–15 mm deep) before cabinet assembly or on site with a plunge router. Best when the underside of the cabinet is visible from seated eye level.

Surface-mounted: Screwed or clipped directly to the flat underside of the cabinet carcass. Quickest install, no routing required. Sits 6–15 mm proud of the cabinet bottom; usually concealed behind a light-pelmet or cabinet face frame.

45° corner profile: Tucked into the rear corner where the cabinet bottom meets the wall/backsplash, or into the front lip facing inward. Angles light across the countertop at 45°, illuminating the work surface rather than shining downward onto the floor or into standing eye-lines.

Mounting

Cabinet work

Visual result

Idéal pour

Watch out

Encastré

Router a groove (12–15 mm wide, 8–15 mm deep) before assembly

Flush — ‘see the light, not the fixture’

New custom millwork, visible cabinet underside

Cannot be added after the cabinet is built

Surface-mounted

None (screw or clip on)

Slim visible line (6–15 mm proud)

Retrofits, finished millwork

Needs a light pelmet / face frame to conceal

45° corner

Aucun

Light angled 45° across the counter

Backsplash / wall corner, front lip

Throws light sideways, not downward

6. Step 3 — Choose the cover: clear, frosted, or opal

Under-cabinet lighting shines directly onto countertops. If that countertop is polished stone, granite, or glazed tile, individual LED diodes reflect as harsh pinpoint dots:

Opal / milky diffuser: Gives up the most light of the three, and returns a completely smooth line with no diode hot-spots when paired with high-density tape. The default recommendation for polished kitchen countertops.

Frosted / semi-clear diffuser: Middle ground — softer dots, more light than opal. Acceptable over matte laminate, butcher block, or brushed stone, where a pinpoint reflection will not bounce back at the user.

Clear cover: Highest transmission and no diffusion at all. Only use it where the profile is completely concealed from view and the surface below is non-reflective.

Cover

Diffusion

Light output

Idéal pour

Note

Opal / milky

Complete — no diode hot-spots

Lowest (most light loss)

Polished stone, granite, glazed tile

Default for polished countertops; pair with high-density tape

Frosted / semi-clear

Partial — softer dots

Medium (more than opal)

Matte laminate, butcher block, brushed stone

Middle ground

Clear

Aucun

Highest

Concealed runs, non-reflective surface below

Never use over a polished counter

7. Step 4 — Match the run length and the control to the application

The same profile behaves differently across a 250 mm drawer and a 3 m run of wall cabinets. Decide the run length and the switching method before you order cut lengths:

Short runs (drawers, wine-rack cubbies, display niches): A short bar cut to the compartment, one per drawer, is cleaner than daisy-chaining a single strip through the carcass — no cable to snag on the drawer box, and one driver can serve several short bars if the total load allows.

Long runs (a full wall of wall cabinets, a bookcase carcass): One continuous bar per run wherever the extrusion is available in that length; joining mid-run always leaves a visible seam and a shadow line. Past roughly two metres, feed from both ends or move to 24 V.

Wardrobes and closets: Pair the profile with a hand-wave sensor or a door switch so the light comes on with the door rather than at a wall switch. Keep the sensor and the driver in the same accessible void — a sensor buried behind a fixed back panel is a maintenance problem waiting to happen.

8. Power Supply Sizing, Ventilation & Electrical Safety

Driver capacity buffer (1.2–1.5×): Power supplies should never run continuously at 100% of rating. Add up total strip load (watts per metre × metres) and specify a driver with 20–50% headroom. Running a driver at or below 80% of its rating cuts thermal fatigue and keeps the DC output stable as the cabinet warms up.

Ventilated driver location: Put the power supply in an accessible, ventilated space — a false top-cabinet void, a utility chase, or a dedicated electrical compartment. Never seal a transformer inside a closed carcass void. Trapped heat drives the driver into thermal shutdown, and replacing it later means dismantling the cabinetry you just installed.

Insulation and electrical isolation: When a profile sits against metal shelving, stainless brackets, or conductive hardware, confirm the end caps and strip isolation are intact. An uninsulated aluminum channel in contact with a metal carcass is a short-circuit path, not a heat sink.

Certification must match the destination market: A driver approved only for the domestic market is not accepted on an export project. Specify UL/ETL listed for North America and CE/UKCA marked for the EU and UK, and ask for the certificate before the order ships — retrofitting certified drivers into installed cabinetry is far more expensive than specifying them correctly.

9. A Quick Decision Path

1. Measure strip width: Choose inner channel width = strip width + 1–2 mm clearance.

2. Check cabinet stage: Finished millwork? → Surface or 45° corner. New custom millwork? → Recessed flush.

3. Check countertop finish: Polished quartz/granite? → Deep profile + opal PC cover. Matte surface? → Frosted cover.

4. Set the light quality: 4000K neutral white + Ra ≥ 90 for food prep; 3000K for wardrobes and display.

5. Fix the run length and control: Short bars per compartment, continuous bars per long run, sensor switching in wardrobes.

6. Adhering bare LED strip directly to cabinet wood or laminate leads to rapid adhesive failure and premature diode degradation. Wood cannot dissipate heat; as the PCB heats up, the phosphors degrade and the colour shifts within months. An extruded aluminum profile acts as the heat sink, while the optical cover shields the diodes from kitchen steam, grease vapour, and impact.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What is the best profile for under-cabinet lighting?

For custom cabinetry during manufacture, a shallow-flanged recessed profile with an opal PC diffuser gives the cleanest flush look. For retrofitting onto existing cabinetry, a 45-degree corner profile mounted against the backsplash works best because it throws light across the countertop instead of into the user’s eyes.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I cut the aluminum profile on site?

Yes. Anodized 6063-T5 aluminum cuts cleanly with a hand mitre saw or an electric drop saw fitted with a non-ferrous carbide blade. For the cleanest result, keep the diffuser snapped into the profile while cutting so the two lengths match exactly and the plastic cover does not burr.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How do I stop seeing individual LED dots on shiny countertops?

Reflection spots appear when diode spacing is visible through the cover. To get a seamless, dot-free line of light: (1) use a high-density strip or continuous COB tape rather than a standard low-density reel; (2) choose a profile deep enough to put distance between the diodes and the cover; and (3) always fit an opal or milky PC diffuser over polished stone.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What length should I order?

Profiles are typically supplied in standard 1 m, 2 m, or 3 m bars. Measure the total continuous run and order the nearest standard length to cut on site, allowing for end-cap thickness at each end. For drawer and cubby lighting, order short cut lengths instead of one long bar. For architectural projects, Helian supplies factory pre-cut lengths and pre-assembled fittings to remove the site labour.

</details>

Related Links

Cabinet LED profiles — the full range with dimensions

LED Wall & Corner profiles — for cabinet edges and shelving

All LED aluminum profiles — 200+ sections with spec sheets

Send us your run and strip width — we will match the section and the fittings

Articles connexes

Combien de watts d'ampoules LED sont nécessaires pour une pièce？

Quelle épaisseur de profilé d'aluminium est la meilleure pour les installations de LED en extérieur ?
